KIA SPORTAGE GENERATIONS
FIRST GENERATION (1993-2005)
Kia’s first-generation Sportage produced from 1993 to 2005, was built on the Mazda Bongo technical platform. It shares numerous mechanical components with the Mazda lineup, including the engine, transmissions (early versions), and differentials. The Sportage was available as a five-door SUV and a three-door soft-top convertible. One significant achievement of the 1997 Kia Sportage was being the first vehicle in the world to feature a knee airbag, enhancing driver safety. Production of this generation ended in South Korea in 2002 and in North America after the 2002 model year.
SECOND GENERATION (2004)
May 2008 saw the introduction of a second-generation facelift model. Since 2006, Kia has produced the Sportage at the Žilina Plant in Slovakia. In early 2009, Kia introduced a second facelift in the UK. The 2009 Consumer Reports reliability assessment voted the Sportage as one of the most dependable vehicles.
THIRD GENERATION (2010)
This generation featured two engines: a 2.0-liter Hyundai R diesel engine with 184 horsepower (137 kW) and a 2.0-liter Theta T-GDi gasoline engine. In 2011, Slovakia named the Sportage Car of the Year, and it received a nomination for “Truck of the Year” in the International Car of the Year awards.
FOURTH GENERATION (2015)
In North America, the fourth generation Sportage was available in three trim levels: LX, EX, and SX. Similar to the previous model, it comes with two inline-four engine options: a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and a turbocharged 2.0-liter. The 2.4-liter engine delivers 181 horsepower (135 kW) and 175 lb⋅ft (237 N⋅m), whereas the turbocharged engine provides 240 hp (179 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m).
FIFTH GENERATION (2021)
Kia introduced the fifth-generation Sportage on June 8, 2021, and announced its specifications in July 2021..
